He was just 22 years old when he died. He was buried with full military honors on a hill overlooking the Missouri River in present-day Sioux City, Iowa. The men called it “Floyd’s Bluff,” the name by which it is still known. Private Patrick Gass was elected by the men to take Floyd’s place as a sergeant. The disciplinary problems that had plagued the expedition in winter camp were still evident those first months on the river.
